Health Issues

Although health testing may not wipeout the health problems that can occur in Tibbies, it decreases the chance of it occuring. Breeders need to be careful with what they breed with.

Some of the problems that occur in Tibbies are as follows:

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
  • Liver Shunt
  • Luxating Patella's
To learn more about these problems you can visit the Tibetan Spaniel Network and DogTime

All of my dogs have been tested for Liver Shunt by Dr Richard Lucy at Sydney University and are also tested for PRA and Luxating Patella.

There is not much disease in Australia, so lets keep it that way!!

Breed Traits

The Tibetan Spaniel by nature is a "watch" dog, and was used to warn the larger Tibetan Mastiffs of intruders in Tibet. Their natural instinctive ability makes them an excellent home protector by warning their owners of someone or something on their property. They are patient with children, when children and puppies are taught to be considerate of each other.

Tibetan Spaniels are a family dog that thrive on love and devotion. They do not accept strangers readily, but once introduced by the family, they will slowly accept them. Generally Tibbies live a long and healthy life of up to 15 years or more.

Tibbies shed a little bit of coat all year round. In warmer climates, they may loose most of their undercoat the first signs of summer. Females may shed more after finishing their season, which is usually twice yearly. They are a natural breed and don't need any trimming. A good grooming once a week should keep their coat in good condition.

In summary, if you want an obedient dog, a dog that you can walk off leash, a dog that will come when called, the Tibbie is not the dog for you.

Please think carefully before you fall in love with a beautiful, adorable Tibetan Spaniel puppy. It is a highly intelligent animal that will bond very closely with you, but it will not be your obedient servant, and it will be convinced that in most circumstances it knows better than you.
